One of Frances and the world?s largest ski areas Alpe d?Huez, situated on a plateau south to 1860m in altitude, is part of the purpose built Les Grandes Rousses ski area, with hundreds of kilometres of piste linking it to traditional villages like Oz-en-Oisans and Vaujany. It is 63 km from Grenoble and about one and a half hours from Grenoble St Geoirs airport, It boasts 'La Sarenne', the longest black run in Europe; 16 km long and an incredible 2210 m vertical drop. It offers several of the world?s longest pistes. Despite this fearsome statistic, Alpe d?Huez is well suited for beginner and intermediate skiers. It enjoys plenty of sunshine and a microclimate which is particularly active. The landscape covers almost a fifth of the French territory from Italy to the Massif Central. There are not only hundreds of kilometres of piste on the Alpe d?Huez piste map, linking the mostly purpose-built resort in the Grandes Rousses region to neighbouring traditional villages like Oz-en-Oisans and Vaujany, but also opening up one of the planet?s greatest lift-served verticals with more than 2,300 metres height difference between the top and bottom of the ski lifts. This, in turn, means the Alpe d?Huez can offer several of the worlds longest pistes ? up to 16km (10 miles) from top to bottom. It has more than 30,000 ski beds available nightly, with many sports activities (hiking, air, bicycle, horseback) cultural and recreational. Alpe d?Huez is also the scene of events strong throughout the winter.. Around the villages of Auris-en-Oisans, Huez en Oisans, La Garde, Oz en Oisans, Vaujany and Villard Reculas are the guarantors of mountain life. We find the roots of the People from Above. The traditions of the Oisans expressed in gastronomy and rurality, this transhumance by some 370 cows and 2,000 sheep grazing on 10,000 acres of pasture become ski slopes in winter. The reason for maintaining this tradition is twofold: to Huizats have always grazed on these pastures, giving his name to the station: the 'alp' the village of Huez . More importantly, these herds have an action of rehabilitation, by grazing, the ski area. In front flush the weed, they prevent the avalanche prone grassy mound in the first snowfall.
